First Look at World of Darkness MMO Game

World of Darkness Concept Art

Four years ago, White Wolf and CCP announced that they would bring the World of Darkness into the online world. Yesterday, at the Grande Masquerade, an official White Wolf fan gathering in New Orleans, they unveiled the first glimpse of the Wold of Darkness MMO game via a trailer. Naturally, World of Darkness, much like the Mind’s Eye Theatre LARP and table-top games, will focus on social interaction and player politics. White Wolf also confirmed that the World of Darkness MMO game would take place in the popular Vampire: The Masqurade setting.

Ever since I heard the news four years ago, White Wolf and CCP have been quietly developing the game. It’s exciting to see a trailer about this, particularly at this time. I stopped LARPing in the early 2000s, and pretty much stopped following current info about anything White Wolf related. In 2004, White Wolf released the The Time of Judgement, bringing to a close the World of Darkness (now known as ‘old World of Darkness’) and support for the game system. The various settings (Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, HunterChangeling, Mummy, and Demon) in the World of Darkness underwent a lot of changes. These changes affected the global LARP chronicle, and everyone was forced to play in the new settings. For Vampire, it was called Vampire: The Requiem. It wasn’t very popular.

I found out recently that this year, White Wolf started allowing players to play in official, sanctioned LARP chronicles set in the old World of Darkness. I had a lot of fun LARPing back in the day. I’m thinking of rejoining The Camarilla. The Camarilla is White Wolf’s official fan club and the body that organises the global LARP campaign. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been looking over old character sheets and info (I still have my old Camarilla membership card from 1998!), flipping through Laws of the Night, and checking out the local Cam chapter’s wiki for in- and out-of-character info on the setting.

Both the trailer and the awesome news that White Wolf has restarted the global LARP chronicle for the old World of Darkness definitely whet my appetite for the release of the MMO game, whenever that is.

Whoa: the “Grand Masquerade” blindsided me completely, and many other old WoD fans too I’m sure. Have you heard anything about what the “Grand Vision” implies for the publication of World of Darkness tabletop RPG books?

I haven’t heard anything yet on that point, but one of my colleagues is an ST and attending the Grand Masquerade, so I’m going to corner him for information when he returns.

Don’t Rejoin the Cam unless you like drama served to you three different ways from Sunday… trust me, I know people in that org up to trustee level.

@ Dynannamika: Hm, that’s a pretty strong response. I managed to avoid Cam drama in the thee years I was actively playing. You’ve been a member far more recently than I; has anything changed that caused the Cam to be more drama prone than what I apparently experienced?
