PS3 or Wii: What Are Game Industry Professionals Buying?

Gamasutra asked industry professionals, academics, and game design students which next-generation console they would be buying this week (if any):

Q: As a video game professional, are you buying a Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo’s Wii or both on their North American launch later next week? How are you securing your console (eBay, pre-order, queue?), and what underpinned your buying decision?

Interestingly, of the professionals we surveyed, the significant majority of them were more excited about Nintendo’s Wii, and were intending to buy that console first. However, the PS3 wasn’t left out entirely, and some curmudgeonly responders even insisted that they would buy nothing at all.

I actually went out and bought a 360 yesterday, amidst all of the PS3 and Wii launch hoopla! Some call me crazy, but the Micro Center $100 rebate deal was just too good to pass up. I had planned on getting a Wii until that rebate news surfaced.

Hopefully, I’ll actually be able to set it up and play something this weekend. ;)

Personally, I’m not touching either console for a while. Y’know, until there’s things like more games, and any early quirks with the hardware have been worked out!

I am waiting on all three. There aren’t nearly enough games that I want to play for any of the consoles.

If I had not already won a free Xbox 360 I would still be “Next-gen-less” right now. Gears of War might, MIGHT have been good enough for me to buy a 360 for. And Zelda might be good enough for me to buy a Wii for, I’m going to see if I get one for Christmas and if not I’ll buy a Wii in January. There is absolutely nothing I want for the PS3 until FF13 comes out so I am passing on that one for now.
