Where the Parties At?

Conference Associates have been asking about parties. Because I know of the party page on the GDC06 Wiki, I seem to have become the source of information. I was on the expo floor yesterday collecting swag, and one of the other CAs mentioned that he wanted to try to get into the Microsoft party, but didn’t know where it was or when. I told him that I knew where to find the information. His eyes widened and he was like, “Where? How do you know?!” And so I told him.

Two of the other CAs and I tried to get into the (invitation-only) Sony party last night. One of the guys works for EA and he knows someone who works for Sony who might have been able to get us in. We showed up at the door, where police officers stood behind metal barricades (the party was outdoors). Unfortunately, the EA guy’s contact wasn’t around, so we loitered around the entrance for a few minutes before meeting up with some programmers and artists from Firaxis who were leaving the party. They said that the Sony party sucked, so we all chatted outside for a bit before heading towards the Fairmont lobby.

The Fairmont lobby was packed with industry folks schmoozing and networking. I was kind of struck by the number of non-nerdy people I saw. We all had drinks and sat talking for a little while. One of the Firaxis artists mentioned that I was being too quiet and not talkative. Sometimes I’m not good at the small talk, but I do have my moments.

The bartender at the Fairmont bar was the same guy I saw at O’Flaherty’s pub last Saturday when I met up with one of my UK friends. I mentioned that I thought he was cute, and the guys at the table were all, “Oh, let’s go introduce you” and shit like that. I just said that I thought he was cute, but that doesn’t mean I want to “tap that shit”. LOL.

I crashed at around 02:00. It was nice to get out and drink and talk to people I didn’t know.

Tonight’s party options include heading to Suite Night at the Fairmont. This is where all the big companies rent suites in the hotel and it’s like a party crawl sort of thing. Apparently, there is more swag to be had.

Also, there is Microsoft’s women in games gathering at the Fairmont as well. I’m planning on going to that, but I only know one person who is going, and she might not be able to make it because she is working at that time. She’s trying to find someone to cover her shift, though. I’ll meet up with her after the Nintendo keynote to see where she is with that. Anyway, it would be nice to show up at that gathering with someone rather than all by my lonesome. If she’s not going, then I hope to find someone else.

There is one other party option that I am interested in taking, but I need to find out specifics later on in the day. I’m not hugely interested in trying to get into Microsoft’s private party, but who knows. If the other ones are lame, I may try to see if people are going to the MS one. Someone told me that I should experience either Microsoft’s or Sony’s parties at least once. Then again, someone else told me that most of the private corporate parties are lame and they try too hard to be fun and cool.

Not going to the Nintendo keynote because I am actually on duty right now as I type this. Once the session evaluations come in, I’ll be doing data entry. Planning on going to the Will Wright keynote, though.

I should have set aside more room in my luggage for swag. I got this really awesome NCSoft swag bag (glossy thick paper) with gorgeous artwork of women from various NCSoft games (City of Villians, Guild Wars, Tabula Rasa, etc.) on one side, and this thing is so not going to fit in my small suitcase unless I fold it. I’ve been collecting things like plastic cups, t-shirts, pens, USB hubs, etc. from various companies. I don’t even need all this shit. Was really pleased that the Nintendo Brain Training (or whatever the US title is) shirt that I got was in a size Small. Win! Will try to get another one to give away.

By the way, and I don’t know if this has been announced anywhere, but I asked one of the Nintendo booth women (I guess the word is “babes”) when the DS Lite was coming out in the US. The lady I spoke to said that it would be released in July.

That’s all for now.

P.S. — Yes I know that the title of this post is grammatically incorrect.

Oh man… It’s been hectic! I’ll try to remember everything and post something tomorrow. It’s been a week of work, revelry (not quite drunken, though), and loads of fun!
