Keys Now Available for Upcoming Guild Wars PvP Event

If you don’t currently play Guild Wars and would like to check out the PvP action for free, ArenaNet has just made game keys available.

The Guild Wars Team would like to invite gamers everywhere to join us on the weekend of January 20th for a Guild Wars: Factions Global PvP Free-For-All Weekend Event! This event will take place on the Battle Isles, the new PvP continent. Players can visit this new area of the world to to try out a brand new arena, to visit the new combat training zones, or to experience the PvP explorable areas. Join us to get an early look at how PvP will evolve with the coming of Guild Wars: Factions!

During the PvP event, players will be able to try out the two new Professions, the Assassin and the Ritualist. There is an FAQ on the main page, detailing specifics.

I will be deleting a character so that I can create a Ritualist or Assassin Primary for the PvP event. I have no spare character slots. My Elementalist (Adrastos) is still in Pre-Searing (along with my Warrior/Monk) and has not chosen a second Profession. Even though I like him more than my Warrior/Monk, I would like to get all the Skills for all the Professions. Adrastos is the only redundancy in my character roster, Profession-wise. I already have the six Professions represented in my Necromancer/Mesmer (Khirsah), Ranger/Elementalist (Ralaar), and Warrior/Monk (Varda). Hrm… Maybe I can delete Adrastos and re-create him in Warrior/Monk or Monk/Warrior form. However, Adrastos without his bishounen good looks, his noble bearing, and his general prettiness just wouldn’t be the same if he was anything but an Elementalist Primary. Then again, Varda is only Level 5, and she has never grown on me. It’s just like Livia, the Mesmer/Monk I created and deleted because she was ugly. Oh, decisions decisions.

I could use one of the free keys to create a character for the event, but then all the Faction Points, Rank, and Skills I unlocked would not get credited to my account. Even though I don’t expect to play too long (lack of time), I would not want my meagre ‘earnings’ to be in vain.

I still have time to mull this over and make a decision.

    Another key quote:

“players may want to pay close attention to the game world in the days preceding the event; things are changing in many interesting ways”

    Intrigued? I know I am…

As for characters, I’d keep pushing on your N/Me. It’s much more useful later on to have 1 character at the end of the game than 2 characters 1/2 way through. I’d still advise having your 3 PvE characters cover all the professions though. There’ll be at least 1 more slot available when you get Factions. But 2 more professions… so you’ll have even more agonizing about characters to do.

I’m keeping my Necro/Mesmer definitely because she’s my favourite. What I am leaning towards doing is to move the Elementalist on to Post-Searing, dump his items and gold into my vault, then delete him. After all, he was originally created on a whim anyway. Yeah. I think I’ll do that.

I’m really curious what they’ll be doing for the weekend event – I didn’t play any of the previews for the original game. It’s a pretty good bet that there’ll be a sea of A/Ri characters, in any event…

They have yet to fix the damn movement in that game and the horrid unbalance of overhealing.

These are very cool ideas, but I’m afraid the game is just fugly when you are talking about controls, the UI, and balance.

I’m sick of them comparing it to MTG. MTG had horrible balance problems with Blue counter decks and they fixed it by boosting some anti blue cards and developing some new play mechanics.

I compare the overhealing in GW to the blue decks of MTG. But GW refuses to boost up anything to compete with healing. In a game developed like GW there is no reason that as a minimum you need 3 dedicated Monks in your group.

What specifically about the controls and UI irk you?

What do you think would “balance” the game out so that you don’t feel you need so many Monks?

I haven’t been in many PUGs which announced a need for more than one Monk, however I haven’t been to the reputedly harder Missions in the game, like Thunderhead Keep and a couple of the ones in the fire islands…

Actually, that’s not an accurate comparison. It’s not that monks are _better_ than other classes (which would be the equivalent to your MtG example), it’s just that they are normally required for a good group but the same does not apply for other classes.

That may change with the introduction of the Ritualist in chapter 2.

I’d rate storyline mission difficulty probably something like this:

    #1 Thunderhead Keep
    #2 Ring of Fire
    #3 Thirsty River

    I think. It’s all a bit of a blur.
